The Difability Dot

A trophy for a real action that improved another person’s opportunity, dignity, access or participation. A panel chooses every recipient.

What the panel looks for

All four, every time:

  • Real. There is evidence or a referee.
  • A difference. It changed something for at least one person.
  • Beyond the expected. More than their job, a contract or the law required.
  • Told with consent. The people helped agree, or the story can be told without identifying them.

How someone is chosen

  • Anyone can nominate a person, and an organisation can nominate in its own name.
  • Someone can put forward their own action, with evidence and a referee who saw it.
  • A panel member can propose someone, and then does not vote on them.

Nobody is considered without their agreement, or a parent’s or guardian’s if they are under 18. Declining is private: nothing is published, and the person who made the nomination is told only that it was not taken forward.

A panel of three decides by majority, with reasons: a member of Difability staff who chairs it, a person with lived experience of disability, and a community member or partner. Someone not selected is considered once more in the next round. There are 4 rounds a year.

A recipient receives the trophy with their name on its plate, a certificate signed by the chair, and a page that tells their story in the words they approve. Under 18, the page shows a first name and town only, with no photo.
